What is Microdermabrasion? Microdermabrasion is most commonly used on the face, but can be used on the neck, back, and hands. Microdermabrasion treatments accomplish what no other non-surgical procedure can do with regard to combating the signs of aging and sun-damaged skin, and other conditions. It is a safe, non-invasive, non-surgical cosmetic procedure. Prior to microdermabrasion, your face is thoroughly cleansed. The microdermabrasion head is then systematically passed over the face multiple times. Serums, masks and creams are applied to your face after the procedure has been completed to enhance the treatment. After microdermabrasion, your skin may appear pink or red, and even streaky for a short time but will feel soft and smooth afterwards, with a healthy glow.
What can microdermabrasion be effective in treating?
Acne As the skin becomes increasingly irritated our hair follicles become plugged and collect debris. This debris then erupts down into the deeper layer of our skin, the dermis. Our body attempts to get rid of this foreign body with an inflammatory response. Microdermabrasion can be used to treat acne, but requires a course of regular treatments to be effective. Microdermabrasion should not be used on clients who have taken the medication Accutane in the previous six to twelve months. Microdermabrasion is helpful with acne for two reasons, the first is by removing some of the debris plugged in the follicles, and the second is by removing the skin’s superficial protective layer and facilitating acne medications to increase penetration into the skin. Enlarged Pores Fine lines and wrinkles Microdermabrasion works by removing the skin’s dead cells and increasing the cell turnover rate of our skin. The look of fines lines and wrinkles can be improved superficially with microdermabrasion by improving skin texture and smoothing the rough superficial skin layer. By removing the stratum corneum during a microdermabrasion session we can eliminate caked on makeup and debris, which exaggerate the look of our wrinkles and fine lines. Most people assume wrinkles and lines on our faces are the natural result of aging, but they are not. The sun is the greatest cause of wrinkled and damaged skin. Skin on a person’s back or buttocks (any area usually protected from the sun) is usually less wrinkled and damaged than that of the face. If our skin is protected from sun damage, either with sunscreen or by sun avoidance, we will see less wrinkling and fine lines. Scars By ‘sanding down’ the skin’s dead cells and increasing cell turnover, microdermabrasion can effectively smooth very superficial acne scars, but cannot completely remove acne scars. Acne scars are caused as our body’s oil glands produce oil which acne-causing bacteria then metabolise. This oil is irritating to the skin, clogging pores and trapping debris. As our body struggles to remove this foreign debris, a natural inflammatory response occurs. This causes a wound in our skin, resulting in a scar. It is like any other scarring. The wound heals, leaving too much collagen behind. Acne scars are difficult to treat because they usually reside in the deeper layers of the skin, making treatment with topical techniques, like microdermabrasion, less successful. Stretchmarks Microdermabrasion has a very minimal impact on stretch marks. It helps improve the penetration of AHA’s and Retin-A products, but has almost no impact on the stretch marks themselves. Sun damaged skin, including age spots and pigmentation Age Spots’ are those brown discolourations on the face, hands, shoulders, chest and arms. This is particularly the case for people who have spent a good amount of their lives in the sun. This hyperpigmentation, is the result of sun damage caused to the cells of the skin and is most common in lighter skinned people. Age spots are not caused by aging. If you spend time out in the sun, you will develop these brown spots more quickly than people who don’t spend time in the sun. If our skin becomes damaged due to injury or the sun, this can result in hyperpigmentation, which occurs when our skin has areas of increased melanin, resulting in some areas becoming darker than the surrounding skin. The sun is the main cause of hyperpigmentation in most people. Good sun sunscreen should be worn everyday to prevent sun damage and hyperpigmentation, as well as sun avoidance, if possible. Microdermabrasion helps increase cell turnover and decreases the amount of pigment delivered to the skin cells, which helps with lightening the skin. What are the benefits of microdermabrasion?
Removing dead skin makes it easy for high-tech skin care products to actually penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and help build collagen, which gives skin its youthful appearance. Microdermabrasion takes away the dead skin layer and stimulates the rest of the skin to reproduce and replace what was taken away. That creates a perfect situation for adding things to the skin that can get in deeper because the skin is now more permeable. Topical products can penetrate through the surface layer of the skin more easily.
